Inspired by culture

Kathmandu:

Come October 5 and the Valley will witness a fashion extravaganza featuring the creations of renowned Indian designers and a Nepali designer too at ‘Harmony — the best of India and Nepal Khadi Show’. In recent times Indian designers have been able to make a mark in the international fashion industry and with this show the fashion industry in Nepal will get a taste of a wide range of collection of designs by eminent designers like Satya Paul, Niki Mahajan, Mona and Pali.

For the past two decades the designer duo Mona and Pali have been taking inspiration for their clothing line from ethnic cultural roots of India. The Monapali creation, which includes a couture line, a diffusion range and a prêt collection, manifests the rich art and culture of India. The duo has been credited for the revival of traditional arts and crafts like Kantha, tribal motifs and Alpana form among others from oblivion to the fashion world through their designs. The unusual mix of mediums in texture, textile prints and embroidery is the other significant trademark of Monapali. Varied embellishment techniques in ceramic, terra cotta, mouli and surface ornamentation procedure are an integral part of Monapali products.

The designer duo who entered the world of fashion in 1985 at the request of their friends and later started their boutique called Monapali in 1987 in Kolkata are often considered the ‘Silent Contributors’ of the ever growing Indian fashion industry by the fashion pundits. They not only have been representing India in different international fashion shows but were also the first designers from the sub continent to participate in Toronto Fashion Week in October 2002. In addition to several awards they have a lipstick named Monapali, which was launched by Lakme. The designers who have been a part of Lakme Fashion Week from the very beginning have designed clothes for celebrities both from home and abroad. Their list of clientele includes names like Patrick Swayze, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Tina Ambani, Shabana Azmi, Tabu, Lady Swaraj Paul, Juhi Chawla and LN Mittal.
