Journey to Everest

KATHMANDU:

After trying to get together for several weeks with the launch being cancelled twice for one or the other, the book www.WayToEverest.de — A photographic and poetic journey to the foot of Mt Everest was finally launched at Biswa Bhasa Campus here on May 10.

British ambassador to Nepal Keith Bloomfield was the chief guest at the programme, which was chaired by Shailendra Sharma.

www.WayToEverest .de contains 13 poems by poet Yuyutsu RD Sharma and 122 black and white panoramic photographs by German photographer Andreas Stimm that taken on the way to and around the Everest region. Due to various reasons Stimm could not make it to the launch programme.

Their poetic and photographic journey started three years ago when impressed by Sharma’s poetry, Stimm wanted to use some of his poems first for an exhibition, then for his book. www.WayToEverest.de is the second coffee table book in the planned trilogy. www.AroundAnnapurna.de was published in 2005, and their next project includes a similar coffee table book of their journey around the Helambu region.

At the launch, Sharma said, “My heart bleeds not to have Andreas here to share this moment with me. I hope this book will spread good news about Nepal to outside world.”

Though scheduled to be launched a month ago, the launch was postponed for various reasons. However, the organisers believe that the spirit within Nepal is reflected in a better manner now than it would have been a month ago. They believe that at a time when Nepal is opening up once again to tourists, this book will certainly contribute in welcoming more tourists to Nepal.
