Kerala fest in Kathamndu

Kathmandu :

The auditorium at St Xavier’s College was packed on September 16 for a special function — Onam celebrations organised by the Nepal Kerala Samajam.

The programme, which was inaugurated by the Indian ambassador to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, transported all those gathered (around 350) to a different world that is Kerala, a southern state in India. Most of the Keralites or Malayalis in the Capital — nuns from various schools, students, doctors, engineers, and from almost every field — had gathered under one roof to celebrate Bali’s festival.

Though Onam fell on September 5, it was celebrated here today as many of the students were busy with their schoolwork in the earlier week.

The cultural programme showcased Kerala’s traditional and cultural hues in the dances, songs and skits that were presented. This was followed by a lavish 17-course typical Malayali lunch.

Myriad tastes hit one’s tongue as one went from sour to hot to bitter to sweet.

The Nepal Kerala Samajam was established in 1998 and has more than a hundred members.
