Making music

KATHMANDU:

Each year on June 21 more than 120 countries organise live music concerts on the occasion of the International Music Day. In Nepal, Alliance Francaise has been celebrating this day. “This day is celebrated all over the world and we have been celebrating this day since 1994,” says Prabin Rana, deputy director, Alliance Francaise.

This year saw a host of people thronging the Shiva Parvati Dabali at Basantapur. A lucky few were able to sit in the shade of the temple and enjoy amazing music. And those who were no so lucky stood under the scorching sun but still enjoyed the music.

The ensemble had a wide variety with schools like Shuvatara and the French school participating in the musical event. The Newari Orchestra was worth listening to and one of a kind in such show. Some of the famous bands of Nepal like Karma, Shannon Scam, Strings, Cruentus, Limestone, Nekhvom and Looza too had come to celebrate the International Music Day.

This year Alliance Francaise will participate in the multimedia world programme of the International Music Day which will make the concert visible worldwide and during a live show in Paris, DJ’s and VJ’s are going to mix sounds and pictures collected from all over the world and Kathmandu too.

Launched in France in 1982, the event is held to dedicate a day to music and promote musical practice and live music, without a profit-making goal. It is an appeal for spontaneous and free participation to give both amateur and professionals the opportunity to express their talent in all musical genres.
