Packing for college
Packing for college can sometimes be stressful. To help college-bound students get through this process smoothly, consider the following advice.
There really only a few things that a student will need at college and many things they’ll want to bring. One piece of advice: Don’t over-pack. Students end up being stuck with stuff they won’t use and it will take up precious space.
Regardless of your room size, here are some must-haves:
Extra socks, underwear: Your kids can always re-wear jeans and sweaters, but clean underwear and socks are key.
Climate-appropriate clothes: If possible, try to pack only what will be needed for the season and climate s/he will be living in. There is usually not a lot of room for extra clothes, especially bulky sweaters or excessive sandals. They can always trade clothes during winter or spring break.
Storage bins: Stacking things is the way to go in the dorm room. You can get a huge variety of storage bins in the general stores.
Dictionary and Thesaurus: If you have them, it’s a good idea to bring them to save money. Although most computer programmes have a thesaurus built in, the paper version has many more options.
Halogen lamp: Get a cheap halogen lamp. But before you go out and buy one, make sure your college doesn’t consider them a fire hazard.
Clothes hamper: You want something roomy and something your child can easily carry with them when doing laundry.
First aid kit: Just in case. Definitely bring band-aids.
