Peoplespeak: Rains, games and fun for all

Everyone seeks pleasure by being involved in different activities. For me, happiness comes from seeing other living beings relieved from the scorching heat of the sun when it rains. During rainy days I prefer to stay indoors. I love to spend time in computer programming at home. Moreover, playing computer games, watching television, gossiping, reading magazines are rest of the fun things that I would prefer to go for.

In my opinion, rainy season is a fantastic, joyful, exciting, tantalising and the most attractive season. It is liked by almost everybody. It makes the surrounding environment cool. I prefer going out and playing some kind of games. I would like to view rainbow, which is a common thing during rainy season. It makes me happy if my parents also join me in the fun.

Once I was out with my aunt and it was raining. Both of us decided to have ice cream. We took the cones of our favourite flavours and planned to have it on the way. We were enjoying our ice cream but realised that everyone was staring at us as if to say: “It’s raining and you two are having ice cream”. We were so busy enjoying our treat that we were also not using our umbrella. However, we enjoyed ourselves very much.

— Deepa Shrestha, Dharan

I love to sit in my room and watch the rain pattering outside. I love the sight of people with and without an umbrella, hurrying past to reach their destinations. Cars and buses running fast splashing mud and water in all directions. I enjoy all these views from my room eating hot and crispy things along with a mug of steaming coffee that makes me feel warm. I feel very romantic on rainy day. As a rainy day has its own charm and beauty, I think it makes me more happy, and a beautiful rainbow always makes my heart leap up with joy.

— Deepika Sakha, Kathmandu Don Bosco College

The rainy season can be considered as the queen of all the seasons. It is instrumental in bringing fun to everyone’s life in one way or the other. Playing football in the rain has different mazza (charm). Shouting, dribbling the ball and all the time running from one corner to another are really special moments of fun to me.

— Ashok Gurung

On a rainy day, I’d like to play soccer on the middle of a busy road heavy with traffic. I’d like the traffic policeman and all vehicle drivers or motorbikers to come and join in the fun and create the craziest football mania. This is the kind of wildness that I imagine myself doing if it really rains heavily. Just imagine what would be if this happens.

— Bishal Karki

Rainy season is known as the season of romance. So, I’d carry my girlfriend from her home in my arms, take her outside and dance with her right in front of her father making him angry.

— Navalok

During a rainy day, I’d like to play outdoors games with my friends as it makes the ground slippery and it is more fun to slide and dirty. We won’t be able to keep our balance and inevitably we will all fall down. A great equiliser!

— Neelotpal Sharma

Rain, this romantic rain, I don’t know in how many hearts it kindles the fire of romance. Rain — it’s not just dribbling waters, it is the bond between the earth and the heaven. With the pious rain, the earth becomes rejuvenated and is ready for new crops. Excellent example of loving and being loved, isn’t it? So, monsoon is the best opportunity to express your pure love. Let this monsoon sweep away all our hatred, vexations and squabbling and become resurrected and transcended and everywhere we see nothing except love and only pure love.

— Satish Niraula

When it rains, it always takes me down my childhood boulevard. It used to be a real celebration — not only the children celebrated the rains, but we made the entire community a part of our enjoyment. As soon as we spied the dark clouds, we’d cut the branches of bushy plants. When it would start to rain, we’d take off our vests and raising the branches high above our heads, run through the streets shouting slogans like Hara Hara Gange pani deu, yeti le pugena ajha thapi deu. If the rains were late or in cases of no rain, we’d gather in front of our houses and ask for water from our families. And in addition to the water we’d get scoldings. This memory makes every rainy season joyous.

I very often miss my childhood days during the rains. I used to make paper boats with my sisters and we used to have boat racing competitions. I used to feel victorious whenever my boat won the race. Well, rainy days used to be a very good cause to escape from boring classes. We used to insist and request our teachers to tell stories instead. I like listening to the sound of the rain, especially if it is in the winter season — snuggled warm in a quilt. I enjoy its trickling melody and I am sure many musicians have used this sound in their songs and music.

— Biplabi Shrestha

When I was young, I used to enjoy myself in the rains by floating paper boats and splashing water on one another.
