PICK OF THE WEEK: Smoking ‘can make you go blind’

Experts are warning that smokers are twice as likely to lose their sight as they get older than non-smokers. They say many people are probably unaware of the link between the habit and an eye condition called age-related macular degeneration. But research found lots of smokers would give up or cut down if they thought it could save their eyes. The AMD Alliance UK and Royal National Institute of the Blind are now calling for warnings on cigarette packets. RNIB spokesperson Steve Winyard said: “The message is simple: do not take up smoking and if you do, stop.” He also warned people to get their eyes tested regularly.
