Promoting Sagarmatha

Nepal may not have any of the seven man-made world wonders, but it does have plenty of prospective natural wonders for sure. So why not have some of them enlisted in the Seven Wonders of Nature, the voting for which is still on? In an effort to start a campaign to nominate Sagarmatha National Park for the seven natural wonders, students of Kathmandu College of Management organised a promotional evening on November 17 at Yala Maya Kendra, Patan Dhoka.

The event, entitled ‘Glorious Sagarmatha’ featured leading traditional band, Kutumba and a Japanese lady Mika. Mika, apart from her songs in Newari and Nepali, gave quite a good stage presence, joking and dancing around in Nepali style. She also sang to some of Kutumba’s music and duet with one of the bandmembers. Kutumba played a number of their hit instrumentals, that included Utsav, Jhamke Phuli, Tamang Selo, and the ever-hit Resham Firiri.

The occasion also saw an exhibition of photos pertaining to the Sagarmatha region. The photos mainly capture the region’s breathtaking snowcapped mountains, faunal beauty, settlements, people, their culture, and many natural treasures like the magnificent Gokyo lake. Altogether 26 photos of the photos collected include those of Bashwor Ojha, Kiran Pandey, Jagdish Tiwari, Suresh Maharjan, Chandra Shekhar Karki, Bikas Rauniyar, Bijay Rai, and Bikash Karki. Some of the pictures are quite inspiring, and do make us feel — more than before — the need to have Sagarmatha region among the natural seven wonders. The Himalayan yak, Lophophorous, places like villages, houses beautifully nestled between two lines of mountains, innocent children, enrich the exhibition. The one common thing which binds all the photos together is — truly — their naturalness.

“We have been organising events and thought why not highlight a cause this time, to nominate Sagarmatha National Park in the Seven Natural Wonders. This will also highly promote tourism in Nepal,” said Eliza Shrestha, event co-ordinator. The event’s main sponsor was Springwood.
