Spunky defender

A lessandro Costacurta...what else could be said about this MONSTER of a player, from the times we as kids pretended to be him while at a pick up game in the park, to the beautiful performances displayed in San Siro, he has been an IDOL, and a hated adversary throughout the years. His repertoire says it all, Champions League, Intercontinental Cup; he has won his share of trophies, and has always stayed true to his colours, choosing AC. Milan, as his team and his soul. He has not retired yet, and although his playing time has decreased, him along with Maldini were the soul of AC. Milan. A mainstay in the Italian national team throughout the 1990s, Costacurta played for his country in 1994 and 1998 World Cups, as well as Euro 96. He retired from international duty with 59 caps in 1998. In 1994, Costacurta’s bad luck had him miss both the World Cup final (lost by Italy) and the Champions League final (won by Milan) through suspensions. With Milan, Costacurta won the Serie A title seven times, and the European Cup/Champions League four times (1989, 1990, 1994, 2003). Costacurta is set to retire from AC Milan at the end of the 2004/2005 season. Costacurta began at Milan and became part of the great defensive unit of the late 80s and early 90s, playing in the heart of the defence alongside the legendary Franco Baresi. Still at Milan and in his last season as a player Costacurta remains, at 38, a vital part of the Milan defensive unit. Will be remembered as yet another example of Italian defensive qualities and as a true professional.
