THE WORLD THIS WEEK : Antarctic base on skis

There’s no fear of a new Antarctic base slipping into the sea — it’s being built on skis so it can be moved away from any danger zones. The base, for the British Antarctic Survey, will be built on an ice shelf by London company Faber Maunsell and Hugh Broughton Architects. The building materials for the new base will be shipped out from the UK and assembly work will start in about 18 months’ time, during the Antarctic “summer”. The new building should provide a comfortable place where the staff can live and work while temperatures outside plummet to -40C.
