Kathmandu January 19:

As many as ten policemen have faced departmental action following the formation of Professional Standard Unit (PSU) at the Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka.

According to the SP Navaraj Silwal, chief of MPR, those facing departmental action include one sub-inspector, four assistant sub-inspectors, two head constables and three constables.

SP Silwal said four have received warning, three have received serious warning and action is being taken against three of the policemen who were found to have involved in flouting the professional standards.

As many as 10 complaints were lodged through the PSU in a month. The complaints included demanding bribes, manhandling and thrashing people, involved in illegal production of liquor and misbehaving with the people among others.

“Positive message has been disseminated after the PSU started functioning,” Silwal told mediapersons at a press meet organised at the MPR premises today.

Silwal said he had the authority to suspend head constables and constables. “I will request police headquarters in the case of other police officers,” he said.

When asked why the names of the policemen involved in inappropriate activities were not published, Silwal said their names would be made public if they repeat such activities.

“Warning in the police service is considered to be a great punishment and it is sure to hamper their promotions,” he added.

Following the complaints from the people about the unprofessional activities of police personnel, the MPR had decided to establish a separate unit to look into such complaints. The MPR has also requested people to call at 4258317 or 9849023999, email at ktmspu@nepalpolice.gov.np or post letters at Professional Standard Unit of MPR, Hanumandhoka, if they have any complaints against police personnel.
