Vote count of Nepali Congress presidential runoff delayed after suspicious ballot papers found

KATHMANDU: The vote count of the Nepali Congress presidential runoff was delayed after some suspicious ballot papers were found along with the cast votes this evening.

The party's Election Committee had started the vote counting process at around 8:20 pm at the Rastriy Sabha Griha.

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Election Committee said the votes of the party's presidential run-off would be counted today itself.

The party office secretary Pradip Parajuli said the vote count would begin at 8 pm today at the Rastriya Sabha Griha.

Earlier, it had been reported that the Committee was unwilling to count the votes today as the Committee members and staff were tired while the supporters of a contender Sher Bahadur Deuba were pressing for the counting at the earliest.

Deuba is likely win the race as he was just short of 11 votes in the phase-one poll held on Sunday.

3,120 representatives cast votes in NC presidential run-off

KATHMANDU: As many as 3,120 party representatives cast their votes in the run-off poll for the Nepali Congress party president, held on Monday.

It was 28 lower than the voters of the phase-one election held on Sunday.

The election process was pushed to the run-off as the presidential hopeful Sher Bahadur Deuba had fallen 11 votes short of 1,575, required to get the top post’s berth.

The NC statute requires that one needs to get 50 per cent plus one vote to get elected the president.

Total 3,148 party representatives had cast their votes in the phase-one election held on Sunday.

In the vote count concluded this morning, Deuba’s closest rival Ram Chandra Paudel had got 1,160 votes, followed by the third contender Krishna Prasad Sitaula (324).

In the run-off, Deuba and Paudel had vied for the position.

Meanwhile, it is uncertain if the votes would be counted today itself.
