Absconding trafficker nabbed, sent to jail

KATHMANDU: Police arrested an absconding human trafficking convict from Samakhusi of Kathmandu on Monday.

Devaki Giri (31), a permanent resident of Khanikhola-6 of Dhading, was arrested by a team deployed from the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police.

The Patan Appellate Court on March 13, 2012 had convicted her of trafficking a young woman to Kolkata of India. She was sentenced to four years in jail in accordance with the Human Trafficking (Control) Act .

Meanwhile, police produced her before the Kathmandu District Court for execution of the verdict today itself. The Court sent her to the Central Jail in Sundhara.

Giri, on February 19, 2006, had sold a woman to a brothel in the Indian city for Rs 90,000, according to the Court verdict.

The victim had run away from the brothel and worked at a chocolate factory.

After some months, she had returned to Nepal and filed a case against Giri.
