‘Most-wanted man’ was not arrested, he had surrendered

Kathmandu, December 5:

Kumar Shrestha, alias Kumar Ghainte, who is in Nepal Police’s most-wanted list, was not arrested but he surrendered to the Metropolitan Police Range (MPR), Kathmandu, on Monday, the police said today.

Ghainte admitted he came to the police station himself, but denied his involvement in any of the crimes he has been alleged with. “I came here to know why the police are searching for me so much,” he told reporters from police custody.

It is learnt that Ghainte surrendered to the police station as he came to know through his network that the police were planning to shoot him on the spot if he was found. The police admitted the fact indirectly. “We had mobilised a special team to catch him. The team had rights to take action on the spot if needed,” SP Sarbendra Khanal at the MPR said.

According to him, Ghainte has been involved in a number of criminal activities, including muders, kidnapping, extortion and robberies. “Many of the cases were not reported to the police. We came to know it from out own intelligence network,” he added.

The MPR has charged him with attempting to murder Prem Lama at Sorakhutte on July 2, 2006.

“He’s involved in many cases, including the shooting at Bishnu Lama at Show Girl Dance Restaurant on August 31, 2006 and attempting to murder Hinendra Singh at Golkopakha, on April 9, 2007.” The cases are now in judicial process,” Khanal added.

The police yesterday arrested Sagar Yadav, 26, of Sarlahi, on charge of kidnapping one Lok Bahadur Pariyar, 24. The police also rescued Pariyar.
