Another garbage deal likely today

KATHMANDU; Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre is likely to sign an agreement with Aletar locals tomorrow.

“We have held a number of talks with the locals and political party representatives there to settle the compensation row,” said Dr Sumitra Amatya, general manager, SWMRMC, under the Ministry of Local Development. “We are signing an agreement with the locals tomorrow.”

After Sisdole landfill site ran out of capacity to hold anymore waste, another built at Aletar of Nuwakot came under dispute with Rs 15,000 demand by each household in the region as compensation.

There are 42 households in the 300-metre radius of Aletar landfill site. Amatya said each household could be given between Rs 1,200 and 7,000. “The crops will be compensated for as suggested by the agriculture office,” she said.”

A 15-member monitoring committee will also be formed to oversee the pact

implementation. Tomorrow’s meeting

is also expected to finalise the draft of

the agreement.
