Army chief Gurung to visit India

KATHMANDU: Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Chattra Man Singh Gurung is leaving for a week-long visit to India on December 11 on an invitation from Indian Army Chief Deepak Kapoor.

During his stay, Gurung will attend a passing-out parade of Indian Army cadets as a special guest scheduled on December 12 at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun from where he graduated in December 1973.

Gurung is also slated to hold meetings with high-level Indian Army officials and security advisors, a press release issued by the Directorate of Public Relations of Nepali Army stated.

Meanwhile, Indian President Pratibha Patil would honour Gurung with honourary general of the Indian Army in an investiture ceremony on December 14. Gurung will hold talks with Gen Kapoor, Indian defence secretary Pradeep Kumar, Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma and Air Chief Marshal PB Nayak. According to the statement Gurung will visit United Service Institution & Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping.

Similarly, he will call on Indian Defence Minister AK Antony, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, foreign secretary Nirupama Rao, and security advisor MK Narayanan on December 15. According to DPR, CoAS Gurung will deliver his speech in Indian Defence Service Staff College on December 16 will return back home on 19.
