Awareness drive on climate change

Kathmandu, December 6:

As part of a global action against climate change, organisations working in environment and conservation sector today staged Global Demonstration on Climate Change in the capital.

More than 30 organisations, including WWF Nepal, Nepalese Youth for Climate Change and Clean Energy Nepal, jointly organised a rally from Jawalakhel to Basantapur with placards carrying slogans against climate change in order to sensitise people to tackle global warming.

The demonstration included street dramas on climate change and initiatives people need to take in order to tackle global warming and stop emission of the greenhouse gases.

The slogan of the day was ‘Local action for global solution’.

Manjeet Dhakal, coordinator of NYCA, said the slogan was meant to create awareness to begin the fight against climate change at the local level.

“Although the concern is global, an improvement in the situation is impossible unless each individual contributes towards the end,” he said.

Besides the factories and vehicles that emit greenhouse gases, home appliances are also equally contributing to the emissions. “Change in peoples’ lifestyle is a major step against global warming,” Dhakal added.

The campaign also called on the developed nations to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 80 per cent by the year 2050, besides asking governments to take the issue of climate change seriously and to give it an important space in their programmes and policies.

The demonstrators felicitated 20 cyclists and electric cycle users at Putalisadak and New Road for their climate-friendly lifestyle.
