Bir Hospital docs call off agitation

KATHMANDU: Agitating resident doctors at Bir Hospital today called off their protest after the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) agreed to implement the past accord.

Following the deal, the stirring doctors joined their duty after the 16-day-long protest.

Dr Dhurba Gaire, president of Residents’ Association of NAMS (RAN) confirmed that the strike was lifted through a talk held today with Dr Praveen Mishra, secretary, MoHP, who he said agreed to implement the old accord that they had signed with NAMS some four months ago.

Talking to The Himalayan Times, Gaire informed that the ministry had agreed to allocate separate cabins for resident doctors and waived the fee of the residents' doctors studying under government's scholarship programme —two key demands they had put forth.

He further added that the ministry had agreed to provide every ward of the hospital with modern equipment.

Also, the ministry had agreed to supply 'hygienic food' for the canteen.

A monitoring committee was also formed with the representatives from Bir Hospital's employee unions, resident doctors and NAMS for evaluating and monitoring the progress of their work.

The meeting of the monitoring committee has been scheduled for every Sunday and the report would be submitted to the ministry, said Gaire.

However, the consultants and registrar doctors have not yet called off their protest programme and have threatened to continue with the stir until their demands are addressed.
