Bir hospital docs suspend strike

Kathmandu, May 11:

Agitating resident doctors of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) said all Out Patient Department (OPD) services in Bir Hospital would resume from Sunday.

“However, we will continue to wear black bands around our arms to remind the administration that the protest has not yet been completely called off,” said Dr Gopesh Thakur, president of the Resident Association of NAMS. He said they would end the protests only after the appointment of teachers. The doctors agreed to resume work after the newly-appointed dean Dr Bramhadev Jha assured them that anaesthesia would be provided from Sunday. Dr Jha is also the chief of the anaesthesia department. Dr Thakur said the residents doctors would wear the black bands till the senate meeting scheduled for June 4 is held. “We have been assured that the senate will address our demands,” he said, adding, “If not we may have to start another protest.”

The OPD was affected after the resident doctors went on a strike on May 6.
