Inmates’ appeal

KATHMANDU: Inmates of the Nakkhu Jail have appealed to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala for their amnesty. The inmates have promised they would not repeat any mistake or crime in future and said they would work honestly and sincerely towards nation-building. In an appeal to the prime minister, they have also hailed the historic Parliamentary declaration. — HNS

Bhusal’s plea

KATHMANDU: Maoist leader Phampa Bhusal speaking at a function organised by SAFMA in the capital on Wednesday said that women may get participation in the peace process once Prachanda joins the talks. “The HoR should be dissolved to pave way for election to constituent assembly,” said Bhusal, claiming that the existing parliament does not represent all forces. Referring to the parliamentary move on women’s rights, Bhusal said while the parliament has assured women of 33 per cent stake, the need was for 50 per cent reservation. — HNS

HoR proposal hailed

KATHMANDU: Various women’s organisations have praised the House of Representatives which unanimously passed a proposal on Tuesday that permits women to issue citizenship certificates to children, and allows for 33 per cent reservation for women in all

state mechanism including jobs and other opportunities and scrapping of all existing discriminatory laws against women. Issuing separate press statements Women’s Rehabilitation Centre, National Network Against Girl Trafficking, Sancharika Samuha and Nepali Congress-Democratic Women’s Wing have welcomed the move as a positive step to ensure gender equality. The organisations have appealed to the HoR to immediately take necessary steps to implement the decision. — HNS

Nepali topper in CIT

KATHMANDU: Abhijay Singh Jain, a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), has topped the examination of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, according to a statement issued here by ACCA. He is the first Nepali to achieve the Chartered Institute of Taxation Medal for best overall performance in CIT. The award ceremony was held in London on March 24, 2006. The Chartered Institute of Taxation is the leading professional body in the United Kingdom which specialises in taxation education. — HNS
