Call for reform in UN system

Kathmandu, March 25:

The existing United Nations (UN) system needs reform to make it inclusive, said speakers at a national workshop on “The Role of the civil society in the World Campaign to reform the UN system based on Inclusion”. Thhe workshop was organised by the Indigenous Women’s Legal Awareness Group (INWOLAG).

Speaking at the workshop, Supreme Court judge Tapa Bahadur Magar said, “The United Nations was set up with an aim to establish peace in the world. Civil society should evaluate the success of the UN’s role in peace building process, as UN should be a common heritage in order to benefit everyone.”

General secretary of the Nepalese Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, Dr Om Gurung said the UN system is yet to address racial, lingual and regional diversity in the country. Surya Kiran Gurung, general secretary of the Parliament Secretariat, presented a paper on “United Nations, Reformative Concept” and advocate Binda Magar presented a paper on “Women’s participation in the UN”.

A signature campaign is also being organised under the aegis of the programme “Expanding the World Campaign to Reform the System of International Institutions”.
