Campaign to seek UN help to save Dolma
Kathmandu, February 27:
Save Dolma Campaign has decided to seek out help from the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues to rescue Dolma Sherpa, a Nepali domestic helper convicted by a Kuwait court for the murder of a Filipino woman.
Lucky Sherpa, president of the National Network of Indigenous Women and one of the members of ‘Save Dolma Campaign’, said they would seek help from the UNPFII in rescuing her. “We are also going to raise the issue in the upcoming Asia Preparatory Meeting of the UNPFII this April,” she said.
The UNPFII looks after the issues of indigenous nationalities.
She said they would meet Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, chairperson of UNPFII-Asia, in the seventh session of the meeting and request her to forward the issue.
However, she criticised the government for not forming a high-level team to hold talks with the Philippine government. “The government is delaying the formation of a high-level team,” she said.
The government has allotted Rs 300,000 as seed money to rescue Dolma. A minimum of Rs 5 million is required to meet the expenses in compensating the victim’s family and hiring a defence lawyer.
