Envoy bags award

KATHMANDU: Dr Shankar P Sharma, Ambassador of Nepal to the United States, was honoured with the Distinguished Alumni Award by the East-West Centre, Hawaii, USA and the East-West Centre Association. The award recognises outstanding accomplishments, including significant contributions to the promotion of better relations and understanding among the people of Asia, the Pacific, and the United States; significant achievement in his career field and continuing support for the goals and objectives of the Centre. According to the Embassy of Nepal, Washington DC, Dr Sharma will officially receive this award during the EWC/EWCA International Conference which will be held from 2- 5 July, 2010 in Honolulu. US President Barak Obama has been invited as a Chief Guest for the Conference.

Two killed in mishap

KATHMANDU: Niraj Thapa, who was injured in a road accident, died while undergoing treatment in TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj on Saturday. Thapa hailing from New Baneshwor had slammed the motorcycle he was riding into a stationary truck in Basundhara on Friday. Meanwhile, another victim of a road accident, David Bade of Madhyapur Thimi- 6, Bhaktapur, died while undergoing in B&B hospital, Gwarko on Saturday. A motorcycle he was riding was hit by a microbus in Thimi on Friday. The police have been pursing the microbus driver, who is at large.

House burgled

KATHMANDU: A gang of around four unidentified persons looted a house belonging to Mina Maya Bhujel in Chapali, Bhadrakali- 6 on Saturday. The gang looted property and valuables worth Rs 263,000, including a cash of Rs 2,000, six tolas of gold ornaments, two cameras and two mobile phone sets, police said.

Leaders Sudan-bound

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML lawmaker, Pradeep Gyawali on Saturday embarked on a weeklong visit to Sudan, leading a five-member team of parliamentary State Affairs Committee. The team will make a field assessment and investigate into the irregularities while purchasing logistics for the Nepal Police personnel on UN peacekeeping mission. The CA members include Gyawali himself, Jagadish Narsingh KC, Ram Janam Chaudhary, Leela Neichayin and Bhim Prasad Gauchan.
