Chhath ends after sunrise
KATHMANDU: The four day long Chhath festival, concluded after devotees made offerings to the rising Sun on Sunday.
This festival is widely celebrated in the Terai by the Terai people but it is also being celebrated throughout the country by other communities since the past few years.
To participate in the celebrations Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, CPN-UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal , NC general secretary Bimalendra Nidhi, Sadhbhawana’s Rajendra Mahato and other leaders had visited Rani Pokhari on Saturday night.
During this festival the Sun is worshipped at dawn and twilight. Vegetarian food ingredients like banana, sugarcane, thekuwa and bhusuwa are mainly consumed.
On the very first day people fast, bathe in holy water and break the fast with vegetarian food. On the second day they fast the whole day and break it late in the evening after ceremonies at home. Likewise on the third day people prepare special dishes at home during the day and on the final day families and friends visit the river bank again to make offerings to the rising Sun and conclude the festival.
