CIB cautions people against lottery scams

Kathmandu, November 16

The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police has cautioned people not to be lured by lottery scammers.

The warning comes after the CIB and many other police units received complaints of people defrauded by racketeers.

SP Jeevan Shrestha, CIB spokesperson, said the messages sent to Internet and mobile users claim that the recipient has won a substantial sum of money in an online lottery. “The messages entice gullible recipients into replying to scammers and sending them a certain amount ‘for tax clearance to claim the lottery’. Some victims even deposited cash in the bank accounts as demanded by scammers,” he informed.

CIB has appealed to all to report to Metropolitan Police Crime Division or the nearest police units if they receive such messages on their social networking sites or mobile phone.
