CJ vows to reform judiciary

Kathmandu, January 11:

Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri today expressed his commitment to implement the report recently prepared by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on reforming the judiciary.

“I will find ways to implement the report,” secretary of the SCBA Shiv Rijal quoted the Chief

Justice as saying.

During his meeting with representatives of the bar body, the Chief Justice expressed his commitment to implement the suggestions for speedy justice, checking graft and irregularities in the judiciary.

President Prakash Raut, vice-president Ravi Raj Bhandari, Secretary Rijal and executive members had met the Chief Justice in his chamber in the Supreme Court and sought his commitment to implement the report.

“We handed him a copy of the report. The CJ assured us that he will make preparations to implement the report,” Rijal added.

Giri also assured the lawyers that he will reshuffle the committee he recently formed to explore ways to implement the report. “He told us that he will appoint a senior SC justice as the chief of the committee.”

Lawyers have expressed dissatisfaction over the CJ’s decision to form the committee under a District Court Judge. Stating that reforming judiciary is a grave task, the lawyers have demanded that a Supreme Court Justice head the committee.

Giri, however, told the lawyers he will first read the report thoroughly.

The bar body will submit copies of the report to the Parliament, the Judicial Council, Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Cabinet, Nepal Law Commission, Nepal Bar Council, Nepal Bar Association, the Federation of Nepali Journalists and the Press Council of Nepal.
