Classes conducted in prohibited area
Kathmandu, January 30:
Protesting against the TU’s decision to extend winter vacation by 11 days, lecturers today took classes on the street outside the Tri-Chandra Campus.
Lecturer Sunil Karna took mathematics class at 8 am in the morning on the street, a prohibited area, as Karna and students could not enter the campus as the main gate was locked. A large number of students attended the class.
Shiva Prasad Munakarmi, president of the Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association, took two classes of masters’ level at the Nepal Commerce Campus.
Addressing a meeting in Ghantaghar, Rameshwor Upadhaya, general secretary, Nepal University Teachers’ Association, said the TU, an autonomous body, should not put the students’ future at stake by bowing down to autocracy.
“We will continue taking classes on the streets if the campus administration or the government bars the students from entering the campus premises.” Two teachers’ unions — NUTA and TUTA — today submitted a memorandum to the TU vice-chancellor, urging him to review the decision to extend the vacation.
Lecturers will gherao the TU central campus from 11 am to 1 pm in front of the MSU contact campus tomorrow if the decision to extend the vacation is not reviewed, Upadhaya said.
At a press meet held here today, Free Students’ Union and teachers’ union of the Nepal Commerce Campus asked the students to attend classes from tomorrow, as classes will be conducted regularly from the same day.
Meanwhile, the TU has delegated to the chiefs of its affiliate campuses the authority to run classes or extend winter vacation till February 9, RSS, citing a notice issued by the university today, stated.
