Nepali Congress, UCPN-M for constitution amendment on consensus
KATHMANDU: Top leaders of main opposition Nepali Congress and ruling UCPN-Maoist on Tuesday forged an understanding to amend the constitution through consensus among the major stakeholders in order to resolve the Madhes agitation.
The understanding was made when UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal met Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala.
According to Nepali Congress Vice-President Ram Chandra Paudel, the two leaders discussed the constitution amendment proposal registered at the Legislature-Parliament and agreed to forward it on consensus basis, RSS reported.
After the meeting, Paudel told media the major parties would explore the scope of accommodating changes in the constitution amendment bill in order to address the demands of agitating Madhesi parties.
The Parliament meeting is scheduled for today.
Koirala was accompanied by Vice-President Poudel, General Secretary Prakash Man Singh, Central Working Committee Mahesh Acharya and chief whip of the party, Chinkaji Shrestha.
