Customs official gets one-year jail sentence

KATHMANDU: Convicting in a corruption case, the Special Court today slapped one year jail term to a non-gazetted first class official of the Customs Department.

A two-member bench of Justices Gauri Bahadur Karki and Om Prakash Mishra slapped the sentence to Kedar Prasad Chalise for accumulating illegal property. The bench also slapped Rs 4.1 million fine on him for his involvement in the crime.

The bench was responding to a corruption charge filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

In 2004, the CIAA had prosecuted Chalise, the then staff of the Alou Small Customs Office in Parsha District.

The anti-graft body had accused him of amassing Rs 8.8 million without revealing the sources of income. The bench declared that the offender could not justify his sources of income of Rs 4.1 million.

Chalise has deposited the amount in his wife, brother and sister-in-law's accounts.
