Death of woman in accident sparks tension

Kathmandu, May 5

Tension gripped Dakshindhoka, Gokarneshwor Municipality-14 today after a water truck (Na 4 Kha 1006) hit a scootmer (Ba 38 Pa 6087) killing its pillion rider on the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Bimala Khanal (37) of Mulpani, Kageshwori Manahara Municipality. Gopal Khanal (47), her husband and scooter rider, was also injured and is undergoing treatment at Shankharapur Hospital.

Irate locals vandalised the water truck following the incident. Riot cops clashed with the demonstrators and fired teargas shells to take the situation under control as locals staged protest demanding action against the guilty.

According to police, as many as 16 police personnel were injured when locals pelted stones at them. Vehicular movement was halted for more than four hours due to the protest.

A police van also suffered damage. Officials said they arrested the tanker driver to initiate action against him.

In a separate incident, a woman, who was critically injured after a tipper hit her at New Baneshwor, breathed her last while receiving treatment at the Civil Service Hospital, Min Bhawan today.

The identity of the deceased, who appeared to be in her 50s, has yet to be ascertained. Police said they have impounded the tipper (Ba 5 Kha 2618) and arrested its driver for investigation.
