Demolition drive in Baneshwor

Kathmandu, April 23:

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) officials today demolished the buildings which did not conform to the boundary line at Baneshwor intersection. The repeated pleas of the residents fell on deaf ears.

“Please don’t break my house,” said Pooja Pariyar, a 10-year-old girl, to KMC officials. Krishna Kumari Pariyar said that the demolition was against the law. “We own this place and possess legal documents,” she said.

“The ongoing demolition drive is part of the road broadening programme in various parts of the city,” said Dhanapati Sapkota, chief executive of the Implementation Section of the KMC. “We issued notices to the residents two months ago but they did not vacate their houses. We have no option than to use force,” he told The Himalayan Times.

Despite criticism, the KMC has been carrying the demolition drive. Earlier, it demolished houses in Kalanki to broaden the road from Kalimati.
