DoWSS to mark sanitation week

Kathmandu, June 4

The Department of Water Supply and Sewerage in collaboration with Federation of Drinking Water and Sanitation Users Nepal is celebrating 18th National Sanitation Week from June 5 to 11.

At a press conference today, organisers expressed their belief that this year’s sanitation week would play a major role in making Nepal open defecation free country within this year.

The department has urged all citizens to clean their office premises on June 5. Menstruation health related programme will be organised on June 7 and fecal sludge management related programmes will be held on June 9.

Similarly, to solve problems related to public toilets in core city areas and highways, a meeting was called on June 11 with Kathmandu Metropolitan City and other municipalities in the Valley.

Chief of Environmental Sanitation Section of the department Prem Krishna Shrestha informed that 91 per cent of the population have access to basic sanitation facilities.

Thirty-eight out of 75 districts have already been declared open defecation free.
