Dillibazar Prison in dilapidated state

Kathmandu, March 17

Dillibazar Prison is in dilapidated condition due to lack of timely repair and renovation, posing a serious threat to the lives of inmates.

The prison buildings dating back to 1960 BS suffered serious damage in the 2015 earthquakes. Inmates and detainees have been kept in two separate buildings. The prison does not have any female inmates as they are kept in the central jail at Jagannath Dewal.

Jailer Arun Pokhrel said the damaged buildings were retrofitted following the devastating earthquakes . The prison has limited land space.

Presently, the prison houses 612 people who are serving their terms and some of them are awaiting trial in various cases. Of them, 593 are Nepalis and 19 are foreigners.

Jailer Pokhrel said due to lack of sufficient space many inmates faced health issues every now and then. “There is no separate chamber for ailing inmates,” he added. Skin disease, respiratory problems and infection are the common health problems the inmates face.
