Kathmandu, March 7

The Department of Soil Conservation and Watershed Management is preparing to conduct a detailed study on urban watersheds throughout the country. The DoSCWM said it had formed a technical team for the purpose.

Director General at the department Bijaya Raj Poudyal said Melamchi of Sindhupalchowk, study will be conducted on Kharra Khola of Makawanpur and Shardu Khola of Dharan in the beginning. “We are preparing the concept paper and will begin the study soon,” said DG Poudyal.

Paudel said the department was preparing a watershed management plan at the moment. There are no management plans for watersheds in place so far.

According to DoSCWM, more than 6,000 rivers and rivulets constituting watersheds of varying sizes, from big basins to micro-watersheds, intersect the physiographic regions of Nepal. These watersheds possess distinct characteristics depending on the origin of the rivers and rivulets.
