Dramas depict social ills

Lalitpur, September 16:

The CONCERN-Nepal and the Social Work Institute (SWI) organised two street dramas on child labour and racial discrimination at the Patan Durbar Square today. The first drama dealt with the practice of racial discrimination in the society and stressed that, notwithstanding these man-made practices, all human beings are equal. The second street drama focused on the the worst forms of child labour prevalent in the Nepali society. The drama revolved around child right issues, addressed the economic problems and family affairs affecting the growth of children.

These negative factors compel the children to leave home, drop out from school and many even land up in alien cities. Seeking employment opportunities, these children end up taking menial jobs in hazardous workplaces such as stone quarries. “By staging dramas in public places, we want to convery the message to the family members that they have to bear the responsibility of their children and create a favourable environment for them within their family,” Jiyam Shrestha, the programme manager of the CONCERN-Nepal, said. The CONCERN-Nepal project manager further said that this is also intended to address the authorities concerned about the exploitation of child labour and ill practices of racial discrimination. The student of Social Work Institute performed in the street dramas. The drama was directed by the Sarbanam group.
