Entire National Planning Commission team to resign next week

KATHMANDU: All members of the National Planning Commission (NPC) including Vice-Chairman Govinda Raj Pokharel are resigning next week.

Pokharel called on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is the ex-officio Chairman of the Commission, on Monday and informed his team's decision.

"The entire NPC team resigning on Sunday," Pokharel tweeted after the meeting.

Besides Pokharel, the Commission currently has seven members, namely: Govinda Nepal, Yagya Bahadur Karki, Chandra Mani Adhikari, Bhartendu Mishra, Prem Prasad Dangal, Swarnim Wagle and Bimalaya Rai Paudyal.

They were appointed to the Commission on May 8, 2014 by Sushil Koirala-led government.

The National Planning Commission is the apex advisory body of the Government of Nepal for formulating a national vision, periodic plans and policies for development.

The NPC team led by Pokharel had prepared the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment report after the April 25 earthquake and its numerous aftershocks.

Based on the PDNA report, the government had organised an International Conference on Nepal's Reconstruction on June 25, 2015, where many foreign nations and donor agencies had pledged their support to Nepal's post-earthquake reconstruction.

Apparently as an acknowledgement to his contribution for the PDNA report, the government on August 13 had appointed Pokharel the Chief Executive Officer of the National Reconstruction Authority.

The Authority, however, has not begun its tasks for lack of a legislation.
