Epic Muna Madan in Portuguese soon

Kathmandu, November 4:

Bibliophiles now can read Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s magnum opus Muna Madan in Portuguese within months if things go as planned.

The Portuguese chapter of the International Nepali Literary Society (INLS) has announced that it will translate Devkota’s epic into Portuguese.

“On Laxmi puja and the 97th birth anniversary of Devkota, we are happy to announce the society is going to translate Muna Madan into Portuguese,” the society said in an e-mail. Portuguese is the national language in Brazil, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Portugal, the society said, adding it is spoken in Macao, Goa (India), East Timor and parts of Spain too.

The chapter has appointed general secretary of the Portuguese chapter, Laxman Devkota, for the translation.

Prof Padma Prasad Devkota, son of Laxmi Prasad, however, said he had no knowledge of the plan to translate the work into Portuguese. “They (INLS) are supposed to take permission from us before translating.”

“Nevertheless, it is good news. We don’t mind even if they translate the work into Portuguese without permission because everybody has equal right to Devkota’s creations.”
