Ex footballer KC and five others arrested on charge of illegal betting

KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu has arrested six persons including former national football player Anjan KC, on charge of illegal betting on Indian Premier League and Champions League matches.

Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu chief SSP Bishwaraj Pokharel made public KC, Gaurab Tiwari, Bhupendra Shamsher Kunwar, Bijaya Shrestha, Dinesh Bogati and Narendra Suwal at a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday. They were arrested from various places of Kathmandu.

According to police, Tiwari is the mastermind who started the illegal betting with the help of Indian citizen Amrit Agrawal (aka Nagraj). But after a dispute with Agrawal, Tiwari started the illegal betting racket on his own. Police informed that Tiwari had opened a master account under the name of 'Gaurab 300' and 24 sub-accounts on British online betting sites. SSP Pokharel informed that total transaction of the betting amounted to Rs 74,702,000.

Tiwari's main assistant Bhupendra Shamsher Kunwar also had opened an account through which illegal betting on recently finished IPL was carried out. Transaction of Rs 32,297,000 was carried out from Kunwar's account, informed police.

Likewise, ex footballer KC conducted illegal betting on IPL and European club football matches, collaborating with Kunwar, and his account shows transaction of Rs 27,705,000. KC has been banned by world football governing body FIFA from professional football on the charge of match fixing.

Likewise, it has been learnt that others arrested -- Bijaya Shrestha and Narendra Suwal -- also conducted illegal betting with Kunwar's help. Shrestha and Suwal's accounts show transactions of Rs 10,700,000 and Rs 7,700,000 respectively.

Police has filed a case of fraud against the six arrested persons.
