Experts’ call to end syndicate system

Kathmandu, July 29:

Experts today said the syndicate and cartel systems existing in transport sector must end immediately.

"All levels of syndicate and cartel system should end," said advocate Jyoti Baniya, general secretary of the Forum for the Protection of Consumers Rights Nepal, while presenting a paper on "Competition on Public Transportation" here today.

Market analyst Bhola Nath Pokhrel said transport entrepreneurs had been forcing the government to raise fares by using force and strikes.

Journalist Kanak Mani Dixit said the public entities should be revived and every one should help these bodies so as to maintain the standard transport fares. Ex-president of Federation of Nepali Transport Entrepreneurs Bishnu Siwakoti said he was against the syndicate system.

Director general of DoTM Khagendra Mani Pokhrel hinted that the department was unable to implement the decision due to the threat from transport entrepreneurs.
