FNJ condemns police assault on journalists

KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over police assault on media personnel.

The federation has informed that total five journalists were injured in course of collecting news in a demonstration launched by Nepal Congress youth wing Tarun Dal in the capital today.

According to a press statement issued by FNJ general secretary Ramesh Bista, journalists injured in the demonstration are Chief Editor of hamrakura.com and Nepal Press Union general secretary Ajay Babu Siwakoti, Maheshwar Gautam of Rajdhani Daily, Nibes Kumar of New 24, Skanda Gautam and Praveen Maharjan of The Himalayan Times.

The umbrella association of journalists across the country termed the police intervention on journalists as against free press and freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution.

Likewise, FNJ has urged the government to ensure a fear-free environment for journalists to collect news and curb such incidents in future.
