FNJ wants statute to ensure press freedom

Kathmandu, November 10:

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists today organised an interaction with political leaders and demanded that the interim constitution should guarantee the freedom of the press.

Addressing the programme, NC leader Arjun Narsingh KC said the interim constitution will certainly accommodate all clauses of press freedom.

“Since media persons have played an important role in the people’s movement, they should be the first ones to enjoy the fruits of democracy,” he said.

Lawmaker Shankar Pokharel said that if there are mistakes in the draft of the statute, they must be only technical ones and will be amended before the Parliament passes it.

Speaking at the programme, journalists said the government has started showing the same “traditional” attitude towards the freedom of the press.

The journalists demanded that the government not repeat the mistakes made by previous undemocratic governments.
