Fountains to ensure oxygen supply
Following the death of a large number of fish in the Ranipokhari pondthe authorities have installed five fountains to ensure adequate air supply to the fish.
Hari saran KC, chief of Public Garden and City Halls Development Community, which has been taking care of different parks and other public places in the country, said that five fountains have been installed to maintain adequate oxygen supply in the pond.
"Continuous rain for many days was keeping the atmosphere cool but cloudy weather in the past three days increased the temperature and that caused death of the fish" He added that the community is also thinking of putting bigger fish in the pond to fill the loss caused recently.
Bhusan Tuladhar, environment engineer, said that he had noticed the lack of oxygen as a result of increasing aquatic plants and bacteria.
He suggests that the population of the fish should be managed, Regular functioning of fountains and boating could help in making water more moving and avoiding formation of unwanted algae and other aquatic plants. "We can collect water to the pond by collecting rain water regularly so that water level remains relatively suffecient for the fish."
He also warned that the same accident may happen in other ponds of the valley too if the ponds are not properly managed.
According to a security guard of Ranipokhari, in 1988, too, a great number of fish died in similar circumstances.
