Garbage disposal to resume today
KATHMANDU: Garbage disposal, which was disrupted since Monday, will resume tomorrow. Talks between the government and agitating locals today concluded with a nine-point agreement where the government has agreed to address their demands at the earliest.
Locals of Chhatre Deurali VDC in Dhading district had obstructed garbage disposal, demanding implementation of the earlier agreements. Their demands include construction of road, bridge and hospital and distribution of development budget in equal proportions to the areas affected by the landfill site. “Their demands will be addressed as soon as possible and the garbage will be disposed at Aletar Landfill Site from tomorrow,” said Dr Sumitra Amatya, general manager at the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre under the Ministry of Local Development.
“A mechanism to implement and monitor the agreement will be formed soon. The committee will determine budget and programmes,” she added.
Dhan Bahadur Tamang, coordinator of the agitating locals, said the garbage disposal works would resume tomorrow. “We will disrupt the dumping process again if our demands are not met at the earliest,” he warned.
According to the SWMRMC, about 500 metric tonnes of garbage is produced from Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts daily.
“Of about 100 trucks of garbage produced daily, we disposed only five trucks at Tikasthali VDC in Laitpur today,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief at the Environment Management Department, Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
“It will take three days to clear the garbage from the city streets,” he said.
Shrestha said that the KMC would provide two ambulances to landfill site affected areas, one for Dhading and another for Nuwakot district. “We will provide the ambulances within two months,” he added.
