Garbage gathering resumes

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City will start collecting garbage that had been piling up on the Valley streets for a week from Tuesday, after an understanding was reached between the struggle committee of Okharpauwa locals and the government to that effect on Monday.

Dr Sumitra Amatya, general manager, Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre under Ministry of Local Development, said a two-point pact was signed with the committee today. The SWMRC has agreed to draft an infrastructure development masterplan for Okharpauwa in the next fiscal. The plan, that is categorised as short, middle and long term, will be developed by hiring a consultant.

Accordingly, a five-member monitoring committee, including the representatives from KMC, Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City, SWMRC and two Okharpauwa locals, will be formed to supervise the work.Jeet Bahadur Balami, member, struggle committee, said they would let the trucks ferrying garbage reach the area.
