Garbage to be dumped in Aletar

KATHMANDU: Aletar landfill site in Nuwakot’s Okharpauwa is coming into operation from Friday after a three-point agreement was made with local residents today.

Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre under

Ministry of Local Development made the deal with the Aletar locals. Earlier, a comprehensive pact addressing the demands

of Sisdole and Aletar

locals was signed about two weeks ago.

“With the agreement, the compensation row has ended. Garbage disposal will resume from Friday,” said Dr Sumitra Amatya, general manager, SWMRMC. “Each of the 42 households will be given between Rs 1,200 and 7,000.” Households in the site were demanding a compensation amount

of Rs 15,000 each. A 15-member committee to oversee the site’s operation will also be formed.

“We’ll start garbage disposal at Aletar immediately after we receive the letter from SWMRMC and the locals,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief, Environment Division, Kathmandu Metropolitan City. He said efforts to keep vehicles and sanitation staffers at the site had started. The site can hold the Valley garbage for 18 months.
