Govt sabotaging PLA sports: Prachanda

KATHMANDU: Unified CPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' today accused the government of trying to sabotage the sporting events organised by the party's People's Liberation Army Sports Club.

"I came to know after coming here that the government has deliberately barred the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and Nepali Army from participating in the games," Prachanda said, while inaugurating sports activities to mark the 15th anniversary of the "People's War" and the 9th PLA establishment day. "The government wants to make the event unsuccessful," he added, arguing that the former army chief's activities had obstructed the peace and constitution-making processes. "Nepali Army is an integral part of the peace process. You all know the latest related developments," he added.

"We have pinned high hopes on the High-Level Political Mechanism and are moving ahead with patience and responsibility, but despite this they stopped them from taking part in the event," Prachanda said.

"Why stop the events that contribute to creating an environment conducive for peace and help foster camaraderie among the rivals of the past?" he questioned. "This proves that some are out there to derail the peace process."

Prachanda said he had nothing against the police or the national army, but accused the ruling coalition leaders of derailing the peace process. "I would like to appeal to everyone to speak up against them," he added.

In a democracy, no one bans the players from participating in sports, PLA chief Nanda Kishor Pun 'Pasang' said, speaking on the same occasion. "Rather, they invest for them as spending in sports helps democracy prosper."

As per the government's request, the PLA did not stage a parade with their combat fatigue on.
