Govt to form ECD panel

The Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) is working to form an 11-member Early Childhood Development (ECD) council under the education secretary. This information was given by MoES deputy director Devina Pradhananga at an interaction programme today. She said the ECD programme aims is to bring improvement and development in child education with user-friendly and culture-based education and covers all aspects of a child’s health, nutrition and education.

The government has set the goal of providing ECD services to 80 per cent of children between the ages of 3-5 years, which means 74,000 ECD centres by 2015. At present, the government is operating 6,000 ECD centres, which includes 15 per cent of the target group.

ECD is also one of the six objectives of ‘Education for All’ programme. The government aims to ensure ECD programme is availed by insecure and deprived children by stressing on its effective implementation.
