Kathmandu, December 12:

All public and private hospitals, nursing homes and private clinics, except emergency service, remained closed today throughout the country.

The closure was a part of a protest by agitating medical workers against the delay in taking action against kidnappers of Dr Gyanendra Giri and other medical professionals.

Dr Gyanendra Giri, president of management committee of the Nobel Medical Hospital, and other members were kidnapped and physically assaulted on November 18. Though doctors have repeatedly appealed, no action has been taken against kidnappers.

“Mistreatment to medical professionals is common. However, this incident has added fuel to an unsafe security situation,” said Dr Kiran Shrestha, senior vice-president of the Nepal Medical Association.

The protest was held to press the government to provide security and seek action against guilty, Dr Shrestha added.
