Koirala’s assurance

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Tuesday said the government would provide assistance to construct a building as per the Reporters’ Club’s demand to set up media centres at the PM’s official residence, cabinet secretariat, Parliament and constitutional bodies. The PM made this assurance while responding to the six-point demands forwarded by the club to him. The six-point demands include enforcement of the Working Journalists’ Act, security for journalists and easy access to government information. — HNS

Squatters to begin stir

Kathmandu: The national alliance of squatters and unplanned settlers, Rastriya Sukumbasi tatha Abyabasthit Gathabandhan Nepal, on Tuesday announced fresh stir programmes from January 9 to have their 11-point demand addressed. Three different organisations of squatters and unplanned settlers — Nepal Basobas Basti Samrakshyan Samaj, Society of Women’s Unity Nepal and Seti Mahakali Sukumbasi Mul Samiti — recently formed the alliance, to fight for their rights. They would hold sit-ins at Baluwatar and ministers’ quarters from January 9 to 14. — HNS

Gatthaghar tense

Madhyapur Thimi: Gatthaghar area in Bhaktapur remained tense on Tuesday after a government-owned jeep hit a person and collided with a taxi. Ruk Bahadur Mukhiya of Amarpur, Gulmi, who was selling clothes on the footpath, was seriously hurt when the jeep belonging to the Gender Equality and Mainstreaming Project under the Department of Women Development hit him. — RSS
