Landslide claims life
KATHMANDU: One Harisharan Tamang, 35, died on Friday when a landslide buried him at Tinthana VDC, Kathmandu. Tamang was building his house when he was buried. He died on the way to hospital. One Dhumtel Lama was found dead in his rented room at Phulbari, Bouddha, on Sunday. — HNS
Property destroyed in fire
KATHMANDU: Property worth Rs 800,000 was destroyed when a house at Ghattekulo caught fire on Saturday. Fire started from a room rented by Lokendra Dhakal and engulfed all five rooms, said a local. It took two fire engines about 90 minutes to douse the flames. Over 15 persons living there escaped but failed to save their property. — HNS
Dr Baral awarded
KATHMANDU: Dr Hem Sagar Baral, chief executive of Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) and an avian ecologist, bagged a top UK nature conservation award. The Whitely Fund for Nature Award was presented by Princess Anne at a special ceremony at the Royal Geographic Society, London. Dr Baral intends to use the money for conservation of the threatened Phulchoki Mountain Forests of Kathmandu and birds that live there. — HNS
One killed in mishap
KATHMANDU: Karuna Bhujel was killed when a loaded truck rammed into a scooter Bhujel was driving at Gwarko Chowk on Saturday. Bhujel died on the spot. Police have taken the driver under custody— HNS
9-member Gurung panel
Kathmandu: The first general meeting of the Gurung (Tamu) National Council has formed a nine-member work execution committee under Prof Dr Ganesh Man Gurung as both its chairman and general secretary. Del Man Gurung is the member secretary of the committee. — HNS
